Refuge for String Orchestra & Harp (2021)
Premiered March 10, 2021 with the Cape Cod Chamber Orchestra, Matthew Scinto, director.
Program Note:
Refuge is a simple, humble piece with straight-forward ideas and transparent textures. While there are passing shadows, the prevailing spirit of Refuge is of warmth and comfort, a realm of peace to clear the mind and draw breath.
At its heart is a meandering chorale, which appears in a variety of ways: broken up by curious, fragmented solo lines, woven together by two wandering solo violins, exposed in the solo harp colored with rustling strings, and finally stated by the full string section near the end of the piece. Connecting each chorale statement is free, lyrical passagework featuring solo strings.
